So far, I followed basic rules on weaning from general literature but wanted a dedicated cook book with lots of recepies to ensure a balanced and varied diet, age permitting. I am delighted with the purchase of Catherine Atkinson's Real Food for Your Baby. There are numerous, not just a handfull of recepies per age group (groups raging from 4 months to a toddler age). Recepies are easy to prepare. All information in the book is easy to follow: there are symbols after each recepie to indicate whether a meal is suitable for freezing; all measures are in metric, imperial and american values, hence easy for a variety of readers to follow; there are fortnightly menus for first two age groups 'about four months' and 'about five months' to set a good routine; individual meals on menues are crossed referenced with relevant page numbers containing recepies. The information on feeding essentials, food hygiene, food preparation and storage is there and covered in brief but informative manner. There are no glossy or colour illustrations. Still, it is the best weaning book I found. Vegan News Review - I am often asked about recipe books for vegan babies. Unfortunately, there are very few suitable books available and those that are available are generally American! This is a British book, written for parents of the vegetarian baby/child, but I am sure that anyone who is trying to raise a vegan baby in the UK will find it of some use. Chapter One: Covers babies of 4-8 months, providing recipes for lunch, tea and puddings. These early recipes are mainly based on fruit and vegetables, baby rice and a few other ingredients, likely to be found in most vegan store cupboards. All of the recipes in this section are suitable for a vegan baby, although a vegan baby milk should be used. Food preparation techniques (e.g. pureeing and sterilizing) and weaning are also covered. Chapter Two: Covers babies from 8-18 months and offers recipes for breakfast, lunch, puddings and tea. Common feeding problems are discussed. You will need to use vegan alternatives for milk, cheese and yogurt in quite a few of the recipes. Chapter Three: Covers toddlers and older children and apart from providing meal recipes, also has recipes for lunchboxes, snacks and party food.
